Deuter began in 1898, when Hans Deuter converted an old yeast factory in Augsburg, Germany to manufacture sails, sacks and tarpaulins. Two years later, Deuter found himself commissioned by the Royal Bavarian Post Office to supply postage bags and mail sacks. Almost 20 years after, luggage and leather goods were added to Deuter's product line.

The small company was thrust into the spotlight in 1953, with Mountaineer Hermann Buhl becoming the first man to conquer Nanga Parbat, one of the most elusive eight-thousanders of the time. Deuter provided the rucksacks, bags and tents for the expedition. 

Thirty-two years after Buhl's historical summit, Deuter innovated a back ventilation system for their daypacks, called the Aircomfort system. Lab tests found that it reduced perspiration by up to 25 percent and even lowered the heart rate and skin temperature substantially compared to previous closed-back systems. This began a revolution in the daypack market.

Deuter's continued developments brought many more innovations, including specially designed rucksacks for mountain biking, the first functional integrated daypack/child carrier and the first back protector shields on sport packs. These have earned them the title of one of the leading, and the oldest, backpack companies in the world, with over 45 countries now selling this stellar brand.
